Welcome! Sanderson Academy is the public elementary school serving the children of Ashfield and Plainfield Massachusetts. Our school is one of four elementary schools in the Mohawk Trail Regional School District. We educate children in the Kindergarten through sixth grade. The school itself is located in the town of Ashfield on the state route 112. We sit at an elevation of just over 1,500 feet above sea level in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains.
Our children participate in a wide range of educational programs. The school's curricula are all closely aligned with the Standards of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Children are provided one hour each of instruction in Art, Music, and Physical Education each week. Our entire staff has been trained in the principles and practices of Responsive Classroom and we use these techniques in all aspects of our school.
The school is relatively new having opened in the late summer of 1997. The building sits on a 40 acre campus that has sports fields, a spacious playground, woods and acres of psature as well as a certified vernal pool that children visit as part of their studies of insect and amphibian life cycles. We are also an official Monarch Butterfly Waystation with a beautiful butterfly garden on the west side of the building. Our third graders have recently planted two vegetable gardens, one in the style of a Native American Three Sisters garden and the other modeled after a traditional English garden such as the early Colonists might have had.
Along with the regular educational offerings, we meet the various needs of individual children with services provided by a Reading Specialist, a Title 1 Math program and a fully staffed Special Education Resource Room. We have a beautiful Library with a rich collection of books for our students. Most health needs can be met by our full time School Nurse.
All in all, the staff and community are very proud of our small rural school and the education we provide our young scholars. I hope you enjoy learning more about our school through these web pages.
